From A to Z.

Between chocolate withdrawals, near-death escapes, power outages, work and technology’s attempts on my life – namely through locking me up in an elevator by myself for nearly thirty minutes – I have not had much time to blog, so it’s always fun when somebody tags you to answer a few things about yourself. Who doesn’t like to talk about themselves? 😉

abc awardI was nominated for the ABC Award by Derek at Station Deva – thank you, Derek! – and the requirements for this particular award looked like fun; all you have to do is, for each letter of the alphabet, write about something relevant to you. For this I nominate Wordsurfer, The Afictionado, Impressions of a Princess, Michelle Proulx, Rarasaur, thematticuskingdom, Becky Says Things and Blogs-Of-A-Bookaholic. Feels good not allowing the award to die for a change, haha.

Onto my ABCs!

rurouni kenshin
Rurouni Kenshin – one of my absolute favourite shows.

Anime – I was watching anime even before I knew it was called that. The TV channels I watched as a kid usually showed a lot of Arabic-dubbed cartoon shows that I later found out were anime shows. From then on I was a fan. There is so much creativity and fun an anime can offer than regular movies and TV shows can’t.

Blogging – I’ve been blogging for almost a year now, and even though my activity level has dropped in recent months, I still find it quite enjoyable and I owe it to blogging that I got to make many new friends and acquaintances.

Chocolate – raise your hands if you saw this coming! I don’t remember when my love affair with chocolate started, but I can assure you it will never end. I am currently going through such bad withdrawals. 😦

Decisions – I’m a highly indecisive person. Whether it’s books, food, movies, plot ideas, blog themes (you’ll notice I’ve changed it twice in the last few weeks), I struggle to come to a decision. Then when I do, I almost immediately regret it.

English – English is not my first language, but I’m very thankful I learned it. It has come to play a really big part in my while, whether by helping me make new friends, writing, meeting the love of my life… I know for sure that many of these things would not have happened if I didn’t know how to speak English.

Failure – This has to be one of my greatest fears. I cannot deal with failure. All my life I’ve been under constant pressure to excel in things, that if I got less than a stellar grade I would burst into tears. I’m still afraid of failure, but growing up has taught me to keep my waterworks in check.

You. Yes, you. I really don’t like you. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Giraffes – I’ve never liked giraffes. As a kid, I was the tallest in my class… even among the boys, who would always call me a giraffe. Oh it bugged me so much. I used to smack whoever called me that, but I dunno… I guess boys in my day were rather resilient. =/

Harry Potter – This book series has played an important role in my life. Not only has it encouraged me to venture out of my comfort zone in books, but it also made me want to write again after a long period of inactivity. That, and it’s one my favourite reads.

Internet – I can’t imagine how life would be without the internet, can you? My mum never uses the Internet and to this day I’m completely baffled at her ability to stay away. There is so much good stuff on the web, so many things to learn, so many new people to meet… it seems like such a waste to not use it.

Jokes – I love a good joke, and a sense of humour is always appreciated. However, ironically, I can’t tell a good joke to save my life. =[ I think I fail at being funny.

That's probably the reaction you'd get from me if I ever told a joke. =[

Krispy Kremes – Only about the most amazing doughnuts one could ever have. I discovered there a few years ago and have been in love since. Their cheesecake, chocolate dream cake and caramel doughnuts are absolutely to die for.

Libra – My star sign. I don’t really believe in astrology and do not pay attention to horoscopes, but for the most part, most character profiles I’ve read regarding Libras almost completely fit me, it’s kinda uncanny.

Movies – I’m a complete movie buff. It may seem highly unproductive, but I absolutely love to spend hour after hour watching movies. I always keep track of new releases and try to go to the cinema every once in a while. There’s something awesome about watching a story unfold before your eyes.

Definitely not that kind.
Definitely not that kind.

Night Owl – I function so much better at night, and I can usually stay up even if I didn’t get much sleep the previous night. Plus, at night is when everything goes quiet, and as such is the optimal writing time!

Online Relationships – Followers of my blog probably know that I’m in a long-distance relationship with my fiancé, but they might not know that we actually met online. I know many people frown upon these relationships, but it has worked for us. Three years together and a marriage this year. =]

Please & Thank Q – I’m usually a very polite person. The first thing my teachers used to say about me during parent-teacher meetings was that I’m a very polite child. Sometimes a bit too polite. I like politeness and do like to be treated the same way.

Reading – I don’t know what I’d be without reading. Well, I’d still be Zen, of course, but I feel that reading defines me in a way. All the books I’ve read, all the fantastic worlds I’ve filled my head with… I just can’t imagine doing without them.

Sleep – Oh sleep, how I love thee. The feeling of climbing into a warm bed after a long day and surrendering to sleep is just wonderful. Unfortunately, I can’t get enough of it. =[

Translation – I translate documents from English to Arabic and vice versa for a living. I’d be lying to say it was my first career choice, but it suits me. I dream of being able to focus entirely on translating novels, but for now I gotta stay buried in my legal stuff.

U.A.E. – Even though Lebanon is my home country, it has never been a “home” to me. I was born in U.A.E. and lived there for 19 years. It holds a dear spot in my heart and I miss it constantly. Maybe one day I’ll be able to return, but at the moment I know it’s not possible.

Violet – This is one of favourite colours. I actually love all sorts of pastel colours, but violet (and blue) is my favourite. Incidentally, I also love violets.

Writing – I think this one is pretty self-explanatory. Writing has, is and will always be a basic part of me.

X-Men – It was really difficult to come up with something for this letter, but X-Men are the first superheroes I actively cared about. Superman was too much of a Gary Sue for me, haha.

Yes – I’m the kind of person who finds it extremely difficult to say “No” to anything and to anyone. If someone asks me for something, I find myself agreeing to it even if I really don’t want it. Thankfully, I’m not at Jim Carry’s level in Yes Man.

I think I probably need to get me one of those...

Zen – Even though my friends call me Zen, I’m anything but Zen-like. I have a relatively short temper, I’m impatient and not calm in the slightest. It would be nice if I could live up to my name one day, but for the moment, it’s just a name.

Phew. That was a long one. Thinking up words for every letter was much more difficult than I imagined!

    1. I was having difficulty thinking of something for the letter Q, so that one worked perfectly! And I too think a Zen GPS would be awesome. 😉 Also, I knew you would say something about chocolate, haha.

    1. Thank you! You know, I thought of you in the last one, with all your posts about bliss. I think finding bliss in everything is a right step towards being more Zen-like. 🙂

  1. Fantastic post, Zen. I love your responses (although I would be a little scared being trapped in an elevator for half an hour – so glad you got out) 😉

  2. Thanks for the nomination 😀

I didn’t realize you were a translator!!! Maybe I can hire you to translate my book one day. What are your going rates for a 90k word novel? I’m betting it’s expensive. It would have to be, considering how long it takes to translate.

    1. Hmmm. Well, depends on how easy the language is, I would typically charge between $2,700 and $3,600 for a novel of that size. Though keep in mind I can only translate to Arabic! 😉

      1. Ack! Well, that will have to wait until I’m much more successful than I am right now, lol. Still, good to know 🙂 You may have absolutely no idea about this next question, but I’ll ask it anyway because that’s just how I roll: Is there a large audience for YA novels in Arabic?

        1. Haha, well I’ll be here! And what I do know is that many English YA novels get translated into Arabic because not everyone has a good grip on English, so it’s much easier for them to read an English version of… say, Harry Potter or the Hunger Games.

  3. Thanks for the nomination! I wonder what kind of randomness I’ll come up with for my A-Z. Love your list. But, it’s got chocolate on it, so how could I not love it! Anime was just a bonus. And, Harry Potter too, of course! Can’t believe you called Superman a Gary Sue! He’s a Super Man. Super! It’s in his name! Have you seen the TV series Smallville? I know it isn’t true to the story in a lot of aspects, but watching that show really brought me around and now he’s probably my favorite of all the caped crusaders.

    1. Yay another chocoholic! And a fellow anime fan as well. =D I look forward to reading your answers!
I’ve actually watched Smallville and do certainly like it. I was more referring to the old animated Superman cartoon and the Lois and Clark TV series. Have you watched either? Clark/Superman was just too… cheesy in those, for lack of a better word.

      1. I boycotted the Lois and Clark series – it was terrible. And I think I missed all the Superman cartoon shows as well… I had Looney Tunes growing up… and then Animaniacs at the very end. Hellllllooooooo nurse!

        1. Terrible is one way to describe it! I used to watch a lot of Looney Tunes and Animaniacs as well… along with Pinky and the Brain, Tasmanian Devil… they used to make some good cartoons. xD

  4. Power to the night owls! I’m definitely one too I work so much better at night, and I actually wake up MORE the later it gets, lol.

    Thanks you for the nomination!

  5. Thirty minutes stuck in an elevator? My head would have come off.

Interesting that you use night-owl AND sleep to describe yourself. Is it a Yin Yang Zen thing?

    1. I think mine would’ve too had I not had something to occupy me!
And I guess you could say that. I make up for staying up late by sleeping in. 😉

  6. Fantastic!! I was tallest in my class, too, but I must say, I love giraffes. They are my favorite animal. Fun list, Zen, and I would have been disappointed if you hadn’t included chocolate – even though you are on hiatus.

    1. Well, when kids keep calling you giraffe all the time, you grow to hate it, haha. My favourite animal is the leopard! And chocolate is an inherent part of me; I actually don’t know how I’ve survived thus far!

Talk to me! I won't bite. Unless you're made of chocolate, then I promise nothing.
